Our ideas in relation to Andrew Goodwins theory
Genre Characteristics
The genre of our music video is an alternative rock song. Usually in such videos there are plenty of shots involving the band playing. We aim to follow this with plenty of shots of the band playing intertwined with extreme close ups of the band playing their instruments. We aim to also include plenty of meat shots of the singer, as this is also a part of the band shots convention. Usually in songs like this a lot of the lyrics are not taken seriously and made fun of, so we have decided to take certain lyrics and play around them. We will try to make them seem funny and have a different meaning.
Relationship between lyrics and visuals
In our video the lyrics will be represented with a literal meaning, whether it be funny or serious. For example when the lyric “It’s always cloudy” we have a shot that shows a load of clouds in the sky. We aim to provide a narrative structure of two people having a fight and realising that it wasn’t right to break up. We aim to tie it together with shots that are funny and break up the serious narrative strands. This relationship will continue for the entire length of the video.
Relationship between music and visuals
For the most part or video will be made up of ordinary cuts. However at certain points the cuts will be timed with the music due to certain sections having a lot of drum beats which are easy to sync the music too. However these parts will not have any parts of the narrative, they will instead contain a lot of shots of the band. The pace of these sections is of medium pace and will last approximately a second in length. All this should create another relationship between the music and the video.
Need to sell artist
During the video we aim to have a great deal of meat shots of the band, but mostly the lead singer. This is because it is usually a convention if music videos. It is commonly associated with selling the song. This can be shown with female singers in bands, they tend to be put on adverts and album covers in front of everyone else to appeal to a more male audience along with those that like the band. However this is rarely seen, as female singers are rare in rock bands. It also helps people to make the link between the singer and the actual band themselves.
Voyeurism
We have planned a few shots to show voyeurism such as people stood in private, having an argument. These things are not usually seen by people other than those involved, this then gives an idea of voyeurism as we are seeing a part of there lives not many others would. We did this to add to the narrative and give the audience an idea that they are looking into people’s personal lives. Our music video is aimed at teenagers so we will try and add voyeuristic things suitable for this age range.
Intertextuality
For this we are keeping our band as all male so as to be like Fall Out Boy, due to them being all males. We may or may not use similar dress style to Fall Out Boy, depending on if we manage to find a few pairs of similar clothing.

Genre Conventions
Characteristics:
Alt-rock through much of its history its rejection of the commercialism of mainstream culture had been its defining tribute. The Lyrics in alt-rock songs tend to contain topics of social concern such as depression, drug use and environmentalism; this is not the case for all alt-rock songs though. There is no set musical style for alt-rock but in 1989 The New York Times stated that the genre is “guitar music first of all with guitars that blast out power chords, pick out chiming riffs, buzz with fuzztone and squeal in feedback.
History:
Alternative rock started in the 1980’s when a majority of groups around that time signed to independent record labels, this represented a major break from the futuristic, hyper post punk years of that time. During the 1980’s alt-rock was mainly an underground phenomena. Even though it was considered an underground phenomena occasionally a song would surface and become a commercial hit or would receive praise from mainstream publications such as the Rolling Stone magazine. The underground Alt-rock bands built followings by touring constantly and by performing gigs and releasing many low budget albums. Over the years the Alt-rock bands of old had cemented the groundwork for future Alternative bands making them popular and successful. British alt-rock was different from alt-rock in America as it had a more pop orientated focus. Not many Alt-rock bands from Britain were big hits in the States but through British radio in the 80's gained exposure in Britain and so were successful over here to.
Conventions:
In alt-rock videos there is usually a narrative within the video that either tells a story that follows the lyrics of the song or the story will completely ignore the lyrics and be something random or something that still holds a meaning behind them but not necessarily what the lyrics have to say. As well as the narrative there is also a live a performance of the song by the band lip syncing and playing their instruments. The videos always have many cuts between the actual performance of the song to the narrative which usually stars the band as either portraying themselves or fictional characters.
Below is an example of a Alt-rock video performed by the band Fall Out Boy.
Here we can see a few of the conventions that I have talked about, One such conventions is that there is a performance of the song by the band in the video. Another convention is that the lyrics and the video itself have a meaning, some of the lyrics when put with the video are a way of telling their fans that things change but people don't, this was done as may fans were angry with the band changing from alt-rock/punk rock to a more pop-punk/pop rock band so the video was made to say that yes they had changed genre but they themselves had not changed and that the fans shouldn't be angry with them for changing.

Advert Analysis
First thing that I pick up on with this advert is that the title is “keep calm and carry on”. The picture depicts the band in a situation where they are adhering to the title and not doing anything to get out of the water. They are just sitting there eating what looks to be breakfast and not bothering to notice the surroundings. The actual writing about the album is written in white and placed over the water so that it stands out better to the audience. The general colour tone seems to be dark as the band are dressed in dark clothes, the sky is grey and the only thing in bright colour is the table with the food on. This could have been done to grab the audience’s attention as they search for meaning into the “keep calm and carry on” title.

Nine Frame Analysis
No1: 0:18
This shot consists of a crowd at a concert, being made up of cardboard cut outs and real people. This shows the beginning of the narrative; (the narrative shows their rise to fame via certain situations that are usually shown with fame.) At one point in the video a member of the band pulls out a phone and plays a sound, the actual songs start is then played when he presses play.
No2: 0:20
This scene is shot at night and therefore dark, showing a crowd of real people crowding round a sports car. Another member of the band is scene walking towards the car ignoring all of his “fans” and getting in. The scene continues the rise to fame theme as fast cars are usually something that come with fame and fortune.
No3: 0:29
The next scene is a dark scene with a spotlight centered on the band in a recording studio. The band are recording with another huge star (shown to be a hip-hop producer.) This continues the narrative, as collaborations are something else that famous singers get to do. The scene is also reminiscent of stereotypes pertaining to underground cultures such as rap and hip-hop.
No4: 1:38
The next scene shows the band in hotel room having a wild party. The lighting in the scene is bright showing a posh hotel suite and the band playing at various points in the room. The narrative is continuing as rock stars are famed for throwing wild parties in hotels and breaking things.
No5: 1:49
The next scene shows one of the band members at a modeling shoot. The scene is darkened with the lights focused on the model. The narrative is continued in the way that some stars, when they gain enough popularity, get to go too a photo-shoot. The scene also is based upon a real life event involving one of the guitarists.
No6: 2:14
The next scene is a rip off of the playboy mansion, which is another thing that famous people get to do as they gain fame. The scene is set at night and dark with all the light coming from artificial lights around a pool. It shows various members of the band chatting to numerous pretty women around the pool with one of them appearing on a magazine after this scene.
No7: 3:03
The next scene is set a funeral which everyone is wearing black and red apart from a few people e.g. spacemen and others. The scene is shot in colour as opposed to a dull setting. This seems to represent the end of their fame and fortune adventure. A few people in the crowd are actually people from previous FOB videos, such as antler boy from "Sugar, we're going down". Also certain celebrities such as Seth Green appear as well.
No8: 3:21
The next scene is of a guitarist playing a solo upon a casket. This is the final part of their rise to fame and is almost a tribute to the dead guitar player. The scene is shot at the funeral and is still bright and cheerful which doesn’t suit a funeral at all. This scene seems to be taken from either a Guns 'N Roses video or Avenged Sevenfold video who have both done a scene with someone playing guitar on top of a casket.

Diary of Jane shot analysis

There are good majority of meat shots of the lead singer.
The editing during the video is fast all the way through the song/video.
The most commonly used shots are mid shots and zoomed in shots.
There is a relationship between the video at the beginning of the video with the lyric (which is also the name of the song) the diary of Jane were a character is shown looking through a diary atop Jane’s’ grave.

Green Screen Tutorial.
The first screenshot is the clip before the the green was keyed out with the chroma key. The second of the screenshots is with the green keyed out which has left the outline of the guy with the odd bump around his person. The third screenshot is the guy with a mariachi band put in place of the green screen.

Front
The iages used on the front are of sea monsters, which link to the title of the title “under the iron sea”. As in many myths and folklore, sea monsters are commonly found under the sea.
The monsters themselves are divided up into groups, with three black ones looking evil, two that look like they are upset/crying and finally one that looks moderately angry. This adds a degree of emotion to the cover and at the same time it puts this emotion onto varying degrees, depending on the amount of monsters there are displaying that specific emotion. The text on the title goes along with the sea theme by keeping the album name in blue, however the name of the band is in black, this can be linked to the dominant seahorse (the black one).
Back
The back of the cover is just a continuation of the monsters and the waves; same colours are just and just layered on top of each other. There is no text on the back of the cover just the waves and the backs of the sea monsters. However the sea monsters are less defined and it is hard to distinguish between which monster is which.
